Arthur Morgan Silhouetted

The Best Cheats in Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games is known for producing titles in sprawling open worlds, mixing detailed narratives with solid gameplay and wacky characters. Beyond that, its games are also known for allowing the player to cheat in various ways, from the useful to the bizarre. Although this is particularly notable in the Grand Theft Auto series, its Western cousin Red Dead Redemption and the more recent sequel also show off a variety of ways to game the system and alter the world.

The format these cheats take is hugely varied. Some attempt to address difficulties that Arthur Morgan may have on his adventures, while others go for the slightly less noble goal of dialing the mayhem up to ridiculous levels. Whatever the player’s preference, there is no doubt that there are some great options out there for when the vanilla experience starts to wear thin.

How To Use Cheats and What They Do

Players of an older generation of games will remember having to input a specific combination of buttons to activate cheats. This is changed somewhat, with Red Dead Redemption II offering a PC-style system across the board. To start using cheats, pause the game and access the game settings. From there, press Y or Triangle (depending on the choice of console) to gain the ability to enter cheat passcodes. Here, the player is presented with the reality of using in-game cheats, in that trophies and achievements are disabled after any code has been activated.

Creating a Superior Horse Saves a Lot of Trouble

There is a huge variety of horses available in Red Dead Redemption II, but as each breed comes with its own stats and abilities, the early game can be a bit of a slog with inferior horses. Beyond that, their value can make replacing or upgrading a horse a costly experience. Typing “You want more than you have” will immediately spawn a superior horse at the player’s location. Superior horses are simply the best of the best. They are fast, full of stamina and have a large health pool, offering stats across the board that are better than any other category of steed. This is also hugely useful for resolving the classic problem of what to do when the player’s horse has died in the middle of nowhere.

Solve All Those Expensive Ammunition Woes

Ammunition is one of the staples of the breathtaking Wild West world. Still, it can become an expensive and relatively monotonous feature to maintain, particularly in the early game. To enable a cheat that will render ammunition stores redundant, typing “Abundance is the dullest desire” will grant the player infinite ammo for all weapons in the inventory. There is a small caveat to this: the player must own either Hanover 27 or Saint Denis 43, both newspapers that can be attained at any point after Chapter 2 (before which there aren’t too many ammo worries, anyway).

Commit Crimes Worry-Free With the Bounty Cheat

There comes a time in every playthrough of either Red Dead or GTA that the player just wants to kick back and start shooting, robbing and fighting everything in sight. Some would say it’s the point. After that, though, wiping bounties can be an expensive business, so typing “You want everyone to go away” will clear any that are active. This cheat goes further, completely clearing lockdown areas for those who find their crime sprees getting really out of hand. It’s extremely useful for those who need their nearby town to become functional again.

Being Drunk Was Compulsory in the 19th Century

Red Dead offers several saloons, taverns and bars for the player to take a load off and relax after a hard day exploring the various locations in the West. In-game, the effects of this are not purely aesthetic, as the alcohol has a significant impact on Arthur’s ability to function. It’s a lot of fun, though, and typing “A fool on command” will instantly get the player to the highest level of drunkenness. Although this cheat lacks practical uses, it is a fun way to enjoy what is, after all, a very authentic experience in the twilight of the Wild West. It also saves a few precious cents for the more frugal player.

Whichever way people choose to play, cheats offer a different, fun and chaotic way to experience a world approaching its fourth anniversary of release. If it’s something that appeals, make sure to include any relevant punctuation or capitalization, as the cheats above (as well as the more comprehensive array available for the game) will not work without it.
