Rewinding: Auburn goes to College World Series with a 4-3 win over Oregon State

Auburn wins the Corvallis Super Regional to advacnce to the College World Series with a thrilling 4-3 win against Oregon State at Goss Stadium.

Blake Burkhalter finished off an eight out save by striking out Garrett Forrester in the bottom of the ninth. Burkhalter came on with two runners on base and one out. Oregon Stat scored two runs in the sixth on a Justin Boyd home run off reliever Skip Carson.

Auburn took the lead in the third on DiChiara’s two-run homer in the third. The Tigers added two more runs in the top half of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.

Auburn goes 1-2-3 as Bryson Ware strikes out to end the inning.

Burkhalter strikes out pinch-hitter Tanner Smith for the first out in the eighth. Matthew Gretler popped up for out number two. Greg Fuchs hits a ground ball for out three. Auburn leads 4-3.

DiChiara leads off the frame with a single through the gap between first and second base. Cole Foster struck out with DiChiara on first. Beavers rightfield made a great play on a Foster foul ball for the second out.

Oregon State went to its closer Ryan Brown down one in the eighth. The plan worked as he overcame DiChiara’s leadoff single with three outs, including a Brody Moore strikeout on a called third strike. Moore was the third out of the eighth. Auburn holds a 4-3 lead.

Bottom 7th

Justin Boyd blasts a two-run homer with no outs and the Beavers are within one run. Blake Burkhalter keeps the Beavers from scoring more runs with strikeouts in consecutive at-bats. Burkhalter entered the game with one out and runners on first and second.

Carson Skipper left the game after allowing three hits in the seventh, including Boyd’s home run. Burkhalter kept the Beavers at bay with the strikeouts.

Top 7th

Bello, Rambusch, and Foster each ground out in the sixth for a 1-2-3 inning. Auburn is up 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Bottom 6th

Carson Skipper completes a 1-2-3 inning in eight pitches. Auburn leads 4-1 at the end of six.

DiChiara scores from third with one out on a ground ball to second baseman Travis Bazzana by Brooks Carlson. DiChiara would’ve scored on a sacfrice grounder, but Bazzana bobbled the ball and was late with the throw to first base.

DiChiara reached on a one-out walk and advanced to third on a Bobby Peirce double. Pierce scored the fourth Auburn run on a bunt by Brody Moore.

Nate LaRue flew out to center field to end the inning. Auburn advances it’s lead to 4-1.

5th Inning

Auburn 2 Oregon State 1

Carson Skipper entered the game with two runners on base with one out in relief of Barnett in the sixth. Barnett struck out Boyd for the first out. He should’ve had the second out on a ground ball toward DiChiara at first base. Barnett got to the bag too late and Meckler got credited with a single.

Skipper came in after Barnett walked Forrester on four straight pitches. Auburn remains ahead 2-0

LaRue, Bello, and Rambusch each ground out for another 1-2-3 inning

Jake Dukart led off the fourth with single. Barnett stayed focused and got the next three hitters out without giving up a run.

Carlson, Moore, and Howell all gound out for a 1-2-3 frame.

Oregon State gets a run back on a Wade Meckler fielder’s choice. Meckler drove in Boyd from third base. Boyd hit a one-out triple that bounced off the left-field wall. Mike Bello bobbled the ball and Kason Howell had to throw it in from center field for a close play at third.

Barnett worked his way out of the inning with a Travis Bazzana flyout with runners on first and third.

Sonny DiChiara launched a ball that sailed over the fence in left center field to drive in Cole Foster. Auburn took a 2-0 lead on DiChiara’s home run. The blast by the All-American was a nice bounceback from last night when DiChiara had three strikeouts and was 0-4 in five plate appearances.

Foster reached on a two-out walk.

2nd Inning

Bottom 2nd

Barnett struck out Jake Dukart for the first out of the second. Gavin Logan had a soft grounder for out two. Barnett finished off the frame with a strikeout.

Gretler swung through the pitch by Barnett to complete a 1-2-3 inning.

Top 2nd

Kason Howell got hit by a pitch while attempting to bunt with two outs. Nate LaRue fouled out to right field for the third out. Brooks Carlson struck out for the first out. Brody Moore grounded out to short for the second out of the frame.

1st Inning

Mason Barnett escapes the first inning without allowing a run with an assist from Brody Moore at shortstop. Moore corraled the third out on a ball up the middle. Moore had to move quickly to throw out Travis Bazzana with runners on second and first.

Barnett struck out Wade Melton on a called third strike for the second out. Barnett allowed a leadoff single against Justin Boyd and walked Garrett Forrester with one out.

Blake Rambusch starts the game with a groundout to third baseman Matthew Gretler. Cole Foster hit a weak dribbler back to pitcher Jaren Hunter for out two.

Sonny DiChiara gets hit by a Hunter pitch with two outs. Bobby Peirce grounded into a fielder’s choice for the third out of the top of the first.


Welcome to Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on the campus of Oregon State. Auburn is in Corvallis for a winner-take-all game three of the Super Regional against the Beavers.

An Auburn loss means this will be the last game of the year for the 2022 Tigers. An Auburn wins books the Tigers a trip to the College World Series. Auburn won Saturday’s game 7-5, with Tommy Sheehan and Carson Skipper combining for 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

Oregon State won Sunday’s game 4-3, with Golden Spikes finalist Connor Hjerpe and Ben Ferrer holding the Tigers to three runs.

Mason Barnett (3-2 4.13 Earned Run Average) will start on the mound for Auburn against Oregon State’s Jaren Hunter (2-1, 4.01) in the elimination contest.
